From GMS

Believe it not, we have finished the school year of 1996-1997. We find it hard to believe that the year has gone by so fast.

Here is how the last week went.

The students played flag football Monday of last week. This sponsored by the Gurdon Junior High cheerleaders. It was a beautiful day and a fun time enjoyed by all, especially for Mr. Alexander.

Tuesday was the fun day with completion in various activities to be conducted on the football field. The rain made it necessary for the students to go inside the gym to complete the "fun activities." We don't allow rain to damper "our day" that we had looked forward to for a long time.

Wednesday we enjoyed the GMS Student Council assembly. The new officers and representatives were installed. The Student Council presented Mrs. Clingan with a beautiful bouguet. Citizen students were honored from each grade. A talent show followed with several students sharing their talents. Andy Jordan brought the crowd to its feet with his song "If I Could Fly". Piano solos were enjoyed and other songs. The Pep Steppers performed, as did the cheerleaders with sponsor Keri Green also performing several tumbling techinques. Norris Glenn really entertained with his dance.

As there was not a staff member of the month, but to honor each teacher, Joe Plyler read a teachers who's who. It was fun hearing what the students had to say about the teachers. The Student Council gave each teacher an apple, but they had to "earn" it by bobbing for their apples, going across the stage with a hula hoop, throwing and catching a Frisbee several times, jumping a rope across the stage, blowing up a balloon and setting on it until it popped, and following the yellow brick road. Everyone had a wonderful time and all were such good sports about their requirements to get an apple. Mrs. Clingan was allowed to sing to Mrs. Hitt, The Best Music Teacher while Mrs. Hitt jumped the rope. Mrs. Hitt had been telling Mrs. Glingan she could not sing, but Mr. Alexander gave Mrs. Clingan the opportunity to sing to none other than the Music Teacher. (I think Mrs. Hitt was correct, however).

Joe Plyler and Kenneth O'Connell covered Mr. Alexander and Coach Reece with plastic to protect their clothing. Joe and Kenneth wanted an apple, but they had to see which one could pile the highest stack of shaving cream on top of Mr. Alexander and Coach Reece's heads. Before each had used all of the shaving cream, Mrs. Roe and Ms. Hatley saw a "fly" on top of the stack and smashed the cream. Need I say more???? It was all in fun and the kids loved it.

Thursday the volleyball games took place, sponsored by the junior cheerleaders. Great talent in volleyball was found at GMS.

Friday the awards assembly was conducted. The Presidential Awards were presented to Jordan Freer and Jodi Purifoy. The Mildred Welch Science Award went to Jordan Freer, as did the top Social Studies Award presented by Woodmen of the World. The fifth grade student of the year was Jill Plyler, sixth grader Jake Plyler, seventh grader Lyndi Escalante, and eighth grader Joe Plyler. Students were honored for not going to D-hall all year, and for having perfect attendance, 4.0 grade point average and 3.5 grade point average. Each teacher presented special awards.

We have had a very busy year. We are ready for a summer vacation, but we will be eager to get started back in the fall. Students will buy their zipper binders from the school when we start back. It will have an assignment book and subject dividers.

Our thanks to you for your support and your interest. We look forward to our article next year, as we will once again be making Classy Moments.
