Environmental Meetings Are To Be Conducted By Extension ServicePublished Wednesday, May 28, 1997 in the Gurdon TimesThe Cooperative Extension Service will conduct a series of educational meetings in every county in Arkansas to explain the potential value of the Environmental Quality Incentives Program (EQIP) to farmers and other landowners. Technical assistance will be provided by the Natural Resources Conservation Service and the Farm Services Agency. In Clark County, the hour and a half meeting will be held from 9:00 a.m. to 10:30 a.m. at the Clark County Extension Homemakers Building at the Clark County Fairgrounds on Friday, May 30. The meeting is voluntary. "The meetings will help farmers better understand how to value EQIP as a conservation tool in their land management decision making," says Tom Riley, Extension speialist with the environmental policy. EQIP is a component of the 1996 Farm Bill. It replaces four different programs, two of which have been standard conservation programs in Arkansas for may years, Riley said. "The program is competitive in nature," he said. "It is not for everyone. It requires 50 percent cost share and a long term contractual commitment to a whole farm conservation plan. "Anyone interested in a systems approach to conservation should attend," He encouraged. For more information, contact Ron Matlock at the county Extension office at 423 Clay Street in Arkadelphia or your local USDA Farm Service Center.
