Morrow Captures 1600 Run

Published Wednesday, May 28, 1997 in the Nevada County Picayune

The 1997 track and field season officially ended Thursday afternoon at Clarksville with Jason Morrow of Prescott winning the top flight's 1600-meter run.

Morrow, a junior vaulter/400-man, had an outstanding two-day event as he improved nine of the 10 events over his sophomore year.

His 7,011-point effort earned him a sixth place trophy out of the 50-plus field of athletes from all over the state. Prescott should have had two athletes in the top 10, but the other man, who was 10th last year, chose not to show for the contest, according to coach Eddie Jackson.

Listed below are Morrow's performances and point totals for all 10 events. After day one, Morrow was in 11th place, but the second day's vault and 1600 placed him in sixth place.

Day one events: 100-meter dash, 11.7 second for 790 points; long jump, 20 feet and six inches for 880 points; shot put, 34 feet and 11 inches for 385 points; high jump, five feet and six inches for 650 feet; 400-meter run, 51.1 seconds for 970 points and a total of 3,675 points for the first day.

Day two events: triple jump, 38 feet and one inch for 716 points; discus, 79 feet for 290 points; 100 high hurdles, 17.4 seconds for 710 points; pole vault, 12 feet and eight inches for 850 points; and the 1600-meter run, 5:03 for 770 points and a two-day total of 7,011 points.

Morrow's nine-event improvement moved him from 20th place as a sophomore to sixth as a junior. He was one of two underclassmen in the top 10 and should be a serious contender his senior year, Jackson said.

In addition to his school record vaults, Morrow also won two decathlon event records. He was the 1997 high point man and will be key man for the 1998 track and field squad.

Coach Jackson said he was thankful to his current administration for allowing him the opportunity to be with the Wolves in the state meet, meet of champions and the decathlon. He added that it was disappointing for Prescott to have no-shows in the all-star meet, decathlon and hepthathlon, after such a rich tradition of track and field competition.
