CHAMPS In GurdonPublished Wednesday, June 4, 1997 in the Gurdon TimesCHAMPS Peer Leadership is a program for the prevention of drug, alcohol, tobacco use, and other negative behaviors and issues. Working through a process such as team building, communication, self-responsibility and self-esteem, students learn peer pressure skills, problem-solving skills and drug refusal skills. Gurdon Primary School fourth graders were trained as CHAMPS during a one-day training session by Gurdon High School CHAMPS. After this training day, fourth graders worked as CHAMPS at the primary school by reading to kindergarten students, helping first graders study for tests, cleaning up around the school, presenting a puppet show to some students and starting a greeting and crossing guard program. GHS students Cameron Rhinehart, Martin Downey, Jessica Guthrie, Jon Lamm, Charlie Robertson, Tiffany Ware, Andrew Wilson, Jocelin Washington and Patrick Stone were also trained as High School Heroes. This is a health education program sponsored by Blue Cross-Blue Shield that helps educate children about the dangers of tobacco use. This program was presented to fifth graders at Gurdon Middle School. Eighth graders were trained as CHAMPS by Malvern High School CHAMPS.
