Published Wednesday, June 11, 1997 in the Gurdon Times

Three Clark County 4-H members attended Missions in Space for the 1997 space trek.

Lauren Arnold, Trey Burchfield and Jessica Herron were members of an 88-member `crew' representing 40 Arkansas counties attending the U.S. Space and Rocket Center in Huntsville, Ala.

The world's largest space sciene exhibition was the site of simulated space voyages for Arkansas 4-H members. Members took a trip to Jupiter aboard a motion-based simulator, viewing movies filmed by astronauts in space, bounced on the Moon via the Spacewalker, entered data in their astrology workbooks and launced model rockets.

Activities were scrubbed for a few hours when tornadoes in Huntsville sent the students into a storm shelter under the Habitat Lodging Facility. The group named theor voyage Apollo 13.

Arnold is the 13-year-old daughter of Eddie and Dimah Arnold and is from Arkadelphia. Burchfield is the 14-year-old son of Robby and Kathryn Burchfield of Okolona. Herron is the 13-year-old daughter of Mike and Marilyn Herron of Curtis.

The group was accompanied by Cooperative Extension Service, University of Arkansas agents Robert Hall, Dallas County; Clauda Corbin, Yell County; Eric Grant, Craighead County; and Burgess Spencer, Lonoke County.
