Rosston Orders New Fire Truck; Discusses Wells

Short and sweet was how the Rosston City Council meeting went Thursday, Aug. 5.

Rosston Mayor Lewis Jackson was in Galveston on vacation, leaving City Secretary- Treasurer Brenda Tate in charge of the meeting.

She informed the council the Rosston Volunteer Fire Department had purchased a new truck, but it isn't in yet.

The truck is still in Memphis, Tenn., getting some repairs done and should be delivered to the RFD in a couple of weeks.

Willisville will pick up the tab for having the truck delivered to Rosston.

Edna Kelly asked Rosston Water Superintendent J.D. Luck how he is able to keep up with people filling tanks with water from the fire department hydrant.

He responded those he knows are getting water are charged for what they get. Luck said he doesn't know why a hose has been left on the hydrant or who put it there.

Goodeau said locking the hydrant would solve the problem, but Luck pointed out this would have to be done to all the hydrants and could pose a problem in an emergency situation.

Kelly spoke up again, voicing fear of the city running short of water.

The council decided the hose should be removed from the hydrant and be put away so people can't just come and get water when they want.

In other water related business, Luck said the city needs to look for another company to help maintain the wells.

The company the city currently deals with was told a screen was stopped up, but went through "a lot of expense" Luck said, before getting around to cleaning the screens.

The wells, now, he added, are working fine.

Granny D has been joined by fellow walkers along the way, and is shown here with Tommy Bensberg of Camden. Granny walks an average of 10 miles a day on her journey and prefers to stay off the interstates as much as possible. She is flanked, most of the time, by her son, Jim, who drives a van to make sure there are no problems.
