SAU Fraternity Earns High Honors At State CompetitionPublished Wednesday, June 18, 1997 in the Nevada County PicayuneThe Phi Mu Chapter of Phi Beta Lambda at Southern Arkansas University recently attended the 1997 State Leadership Conference in Little Rock. SAU-PBL members brought home 32 state awards and the Silver Chapter Award of Merit. Five Nevada County members were among the award winners. Traci Hughes, a junior business administration major, received first place as a member of the SAU parliamentary procedure team, was appointed to the office of state parliamentarian for a second term, and received recognition in Arkansas PBL Who's Who. Hughes will be representing SAU and Arkansas PBL as the president of the Arkansas National Parliamentary Procedure team at the National Leadership Conference (NLC). Shannon Womble, a junior accounting major, also received first place as a member of the SAU parliamentary procedure team. Womble will be representing SAU as a local chapter voting delegate at the NLC. David Jackson, a 1997 SAU graduate, received two state awards. Jackson placed second in computer concepts and third in computer programming. Shelly Browning received first place in two events, information management and word processing. Katie Gordon, a junior accounting major, helped SAU bring home awards from two of the chapter's major commnity service endeavors, Arkansas Children's Hospital and March of Dimes. Gordon also helped prepare the SAU community service project report and multi-media presentation that placed second in state competition. These five plus nine other SAU chapter members are eligible to compete at the National Leadership Conference in Anaheim, Calif., July 4-9.
