Board Approves Contracts For 1997-98BY JOHN MILLERPublished Wednesday, June 18, 1997 in the Nevada County Picayune When the Nevada BlueJays take to the hardwood for the 1997-98 season, they will literally be on the hardwood. The Nevada School Board, meeting Monday, June 9, voted to accept a bid from Tri-State Floor, Inc. for a new wooden floor for the gymnasium. The bid was $32,700. Superintendent Rick McAffee said the company will install a maple floor to cover the concrete currently there. In addition, the pattern will be the same as that of the Boston Gardens, home of the National Basketball Association Celtics. The district will also purchase a new 65-passenger conventional bus from Ward Bus Co. for $42,976. This bus, McAffee said, will have a diesel engine and be equipped with air brakes. In other business, four members of the staff were approved for out-of-state travel. Jill Self, Nancy Walthall, Jack House and Hardy Herrington will attend the 11th Annual Staff Development Conference in Atlanta, Ga., July 9-12. This is the parent of the Schools that Work project. The board also agreed to reinstate credit to students who met with the attendance committee for their extended absences. This means those students who had more than the allowable absences, yet were able to complete the work required and pass the courses were reinstated and given the credits they had earned. Sandra Lafferty and John Hopkins tendered their resignations, with both being accepted. Lafferty was a teacher's aide and bus driver, while Hopkins taught biology and drove a bus. In Hopkins' case, he is taking a position with the University of Arkansas Community College at Hope. Otherwise, all other personnel at Nevada was hired back for the coming school year. Prices on meals served at the school were adjusted. For adults, breakfast will now cost 80 cents, while lunch will run $1.50. Elementary students will pay 50 cents for breakfast and 90 cents for lunch. The high school students will see the morning meal run 50 cents, with lunch costing $1.00. The reduced meal prices are 30 and 40 cents respectively. The final order of business was to approve the proposed school calendar for 1997-98 with no changes.
