Clinton Day Dinner Is June 27th At HSUPublished Wednesday, June 18, 1997 in the Gurdon TimesThe Clark County Democratic Committee will hold its second annual William Jefferson Clinton Day dinner Friday, June 27. The event will be held at the Day Armory of the Garrison Center on the campus of Henderson State University in Arkadelphia beginning at 7:00 p.m. Guest speaker for the dinner will be Rodney Slater, U.S. Secretary of Transportation. Slater was nominated to the position by President Clinton on December 20. Slater had served as Federal Highway Administrator. In his role as Secretary of Transportation, Slater is responsible for all aspects of the nation's transportation fastructure, including highways, railways, airways and waterways. Born in Marianna, Slater attended Eastern Michigan University, where he excelled in both forensics and football. After graduating from the University of Arkansas School of Law, he worked in the Arkansas Attorney General's office. In 1982 Slater began working for then-Governor Clinton, first in his campaign and then as a member of his staff. In 1987, then working for Arkansas State University in Jonesboro, Slater was appointed by Gov. Clinton to the Arkansas State Highway Commission. He is married to the former Cassandra Wilkins of Pine Bluff and they have a daughter, Bridgette. "We are extremely Fortunate to have such a high level administrator of President Clinton's to speak at the annual Clinton Day dinner," said Bill Wright, a local attorney and chairperson of the Clinton Day dinner committee. "Rodney Slater is a leader in every sense of the word, and he represents both Arkansas and the United States with distinction, plus he is an inspiring speaker," Wright added. Live entertainment is scheduled throughout the evening. A silent action will open at 6:00 p.m. Dress is casual. Tickets to the Clinton Day dinner are $25 per person. A table of ten may be purchased by businesses or companies for $250.
