Football Camp To Be Held At Prescott High July 8-10Published Wednesday, June 25, 1997 in the Nevada County PicayuneThe annual Southwest Arkansas Football Camp will be held this summer at the Prescott practice field facilities. Even though coaching changes have been made at PHS, arrangements were made by the camp directors Eddie Jackson and Gary Segrest, to host the camp at least one more year at Prescott, because of the central location for southwest area football players. This camp was established in 1991 by coach Jackson, formerly of Prescott and now Hampton, coach Segrest from Hot Springs Lakeside and Nashville, and coach Buddry Ray of New Boston, Texas, when he was at Foreman. The idea was to promote football in the southwest corner of Arkansas, improve player skills and to promote working friendships between area athletes dedicated to the game of football. The camp attendance has increased every year. At the time of its inception this was the only high school day camp of its kind run totally by high school coaches. After Segrest left Nashville, he brought several campers from the Hot Springs area and the Lakeside football skills have improved greatly in the last few years. Texas rules will not allow coach Ray to work in the camp, but he does bring some athletes from the east Texas area each year. Coach John Pace of Gurdon has replaced Ray as one of the camp directors. Coach Jackson of Hampton will bring some young Bulldogs and possibly a few from the Camden area. As mentioned, Prescott is very centrally located, easily accessible because of the interstate and other highways, and has three excellent practice field areas built by coach Jackson several years ago. Camp directors said they will be searching for a new site in 1998, but Prescott would be considered once again if things could be worked out. Local Prescott athletes interested in participating should contact coach Jim Haynie at 887-2299 or possibly coach David Bennett at 887-3661 for application forms. Football candidates in other areas may contact Segrest at 262-5103, Pace at 353-4031 or Jackson at 798-4413 or 887-3674. The 3-day camp will be held July 8, 9 and 10 from 9:a.m to 1:00 p.m. Registration will begin on July 8 at 8:30 a.m. Search | Nevada County Picayune by date | Gurdon Times by date |
