Building Funds Low; Money DownBY RICKY RAGSDALEPublished Wednesday, June 25, 1997 in the Nevada County Picayune Prescott School officials are expected to begin using funds from a local bank to pay for rebuilding projects almost complete. Superintendent Don Johnston told board members - during the regular meeting last Tuesday, June 17 - about $100,000 of the $200,000 loan should be used by the district since the district's building fund is in the red by $80,000. During May's regular meeting the board gave approval to Johnston to enter into an agreement with the Bank of Prescott for a 5.9% four- year loan for up to $200,000. This loan will pay the shortfalls experienced by the district after only receiving 55% of its claims from its insurance carrier (USF&G) after the April 1, 1996 fire. District officials say USF&G has continued to pay 55% of the claims submitted. The district is planning to submit a bid to redo the lobby floor soon. It is expected the lobby floor will cost about $30,000. According to builders on the project and the district's architect firm, the floor cannot be cleaned and it would nearly be impossible to redo the floor to its pre-fire condition. Board members discussed enrollment and are expecting to be paid on census figures of 1,157 for the next school year. This figure is down from the beginning of the 1996-97 school year. Alternative School Director Wanda Fincher gave the board a report on work accomplished by her classes. Alternative School is set up for students who are in danger of dropping out of school in hopes of saving them. She reported to the board that 87% of her students have either returned to the regular school classes, graduated with a diploma or earned their General Equivalency Diplomas (GED). Board members approved policy changes, a new sick leave bank and the 1997-98 salary proposal. Lunch prices will be raised in Prescott next year to $1.00 for regular lunches, 50-cents for reduced lunches and $1.50 for adult lunches. The prices reflect similar prices around the area. Breakfast prices will be 50-cents, 30-cents and $1.00 for the same groups. All repairs to the lunch area and salaries for staff come from the money taken in on meals. Board members accepted the resignation of Donna Marlar after a brief executive session. Coach Bill Cossey was hired by the board to lead the Wolverettes next season, also. Paula Cossey, wife of Coach Bill Cossey, will take over the counselor's position at Prescott High School. Search | Nevada County Picayune by date | Gurdon Times by date |
