For 10th Annual Chicken And Egg Event

Published Wednesday, June 25, 1997 in the Nevada County Picayune

This year will mark the 10th anniversary for the Prescott Chicken and Egg Festival.

The festival, sponsored by the Prescott-Nevada County Chamber of Commerce, will be held July 18-19 at the Prescott City Park.

According to Chamber Manager Von Gordon, this is a milestone for the event, which made its debut in 1987.

In 1988, the Arkansas Festival Association presented the Outstanding New Idea Award to the Chamber for the total concept of the Chicken and Egg Festival. It was named Festival of the Year in 1990 by the association.

This year's festival, though, kicks off at 5 p.m. Friday, July 18. A Chicken-in-the-Rough (chicken supper) will be served again by the Prescott Men's Ministry at the park pavilion. For those preferring barbecue, the New Jerusalem Church will have what suits your fancy. However, there will be other food booths on hand, so everyone should find something for their particular tastes.

The annual variety show will begin at 6:30 p.m. on the festival stage. This entertainment show has traditionally been well attended and a popular event at the festival. Those attending should bring their lawn chairs, and enjoy the festivities.

For those not interested in the entertainment, the arts/crafts/vendors booths will also be open for shopping and browsing.

Sports fans can spend their time at the Coop Hoop 3-on-3 basketball tourney, where they can see some of the best basketball of this kind in this part of the state. Or, they can hit the tennis courts and watch some top-notch tennis in the annual Something Eggstra Tennis Tournament. If this isn't enough, there's always the Chicks with Sticks Women's Softball Tournament or the Fowl Ball Men's Softball Tournament.

The festival begins early Saturday -- at 6:30 a.m. -- with the ever-popular Kiwanis Club Omelet Breakfast at the pavilion.

Once everyone's had all the omelets they can eat, the children's activities will start with a balloon lift-off at 9:30 a.m. at the stage.

At 10 a.m. the golden Egg Hunt clues will be handed out at the stage, with youngsters seeing if they can solve the riddle and find the goodies.

A new event for this year's festival, geared toward the youngsters, is the "Chickie Pen," an area for children's activities, games, contests, etc. This pen is the brainchild of Chamber President and Festival Committee Chairman Mary Godwin.

Another new event this year is the Festival Little Mister Rooster and Miss Hen Pageant. The pageant will begin at 2 p.m. Saturday on the stage. Applications for the event can be picked up at the Chamber office or the Bank of Prescott. Other information on this event can be obtained by calling the Chamber at 887-2101, or Karen McLlelland after 5 p.m. at 887-3104.

There will also be a turkey calling contest at 11 a.m. and a cackling-crowing event at noon at the stage.

Other events at the festival include the annual Chase the Chicken 5-K run/walk, starting at 8 a.m. Saturday; the Chicken Chasers Kid's Run at 9 a.m.; Ring-A-Neck Horseshoe Pitching tourney at 9; Cock of the Walk weight lifting at 10; and the antique car show starting at 9 a.m. in the park.

For more information or entry forms for the various events, contact the Chamber office at 887-2101, or write: Prescott-Nevada County Chamber of Commerce, P.O. Box 391, Prescott, Ark. 71857.
