Prescott Middle School held an open house August 12. A public meeting was held with parents, students and visitors. Parents were informed of the district's program objectives and accreditation status. PMS is a certified North Central School with no deficiencies. All staff members are fully certified and an excellent program of studies is offered. The parents were informed of the program of studies. PMS is dedicated to the goal of providing the highest quality education for each student. PMS employees feel a responsibility to offer each child the opportunity and means to reach his or her greatest potential. Parent support and encouragement are vital elements in insuring the success of Prescott Middle School students, it was reported at the meeting. With this in mind, a plan to establish partnerships with parents and with the community has been developed. Parents were informed of the COE mission for Prescott School District, and what part Prescott Middle School was doing to help make this mission statement come true. Grade level goals for PMS students were provided to the parents, with the expectation that the parents will encourage their children in working toward these goals. The Title I program offers extra assistance to students needing additional help to reach these goals. It was explained at the meeting that the Title I program has three certified teachers and three instructional assistants. Reading and math are the targeted areas in the Title I program. Assistance is given by using an in-class tutorial system. Title I is a federally funded program for students at risk of not meeting curriculum content standards. Selection is based on SAT9, grades, a teacher rating scale and teacher recommendation. Parents were informed that beginning Spanish would be offered to seventh graders, and keyboarding to eighth graders. Parents were informed about the reading lab in the media center (formerly called library). It is funded by the Title VI program. Also, there is a skills laboratory in Roynelle Gober's classroom. It is funded by CCUE-Special Programs grant. After the public meeting, parents and students visited classrooms and picked up student packets from first period teachers. Ownership of all Nevada County Picayune content from the beginning of the newspaper, including predecessors, until May 2001 was contributed by the John and Betty Ragsdale family to the Prescott Community Freenet Association.
