Plans Continue For 10th Annual Chicken And Egg FestivalBY JOHN MILLERPublished Wednesday, July 2, 1997 in the Nevada County Picayune In three short weeks, the 10th Annual Chicken and Egg Festival will begin. There will be no end of entertainment and competition to those attending and participating in the event. However, to get a team entered in one of the athletic contests, teams need to get their entry forms at the office of the Prescott-Nevada County Chamber of Commerce, 221 W. Main, or call 887-2101 to have a form mailed. This year's sporting events include the annual Coop Hoop three-on-three basketball tourney. This contest will begin at 5 p.m. Friday, July 18 at the city park, and will resume at 8 a.m. Saturday, July 19. Softball tournaments for men and women will also be held during the festival. The men will play at Bemis Field, while the ladies will take to the diamond at Livingston Field. These tourneys will run Thursday through Saturday. Those preferring the court to the diamond will be able to take their chances in the tennis tourney. This event will also be held from Thursday through Saturday at the park courts. At 10 a.m. Saturday, the big men and women will be showcasing their strength in the weight lifting tourney. But for those who would rather have a different kind of athletic event, the horseshoe pitching tourney will begin at 9 a.m. Saturday in the park. There will be a pageant for younger participants with the Little Miss Hen and Little Mister Rooster pageants. Applications for the pageants can be picked up at the Chamber. However, the festival will officially kick off at 5 p.m. Friday with the annual Chicken-in-the-Rough dinner, served again by the Prescott Men's Ministry at the park pavilion. But this isn't the only food that will be available at the festival. The new Jerusalem Church booth will feature barbecue. At 6:30 Friday evening, the annual variety show will be held on the park stage. Those attending need to remember and bring lawn chairs so they can avoid standing up through the show. There will also be plenty of arts and crafts vendors for shopping and browsing. Concession stands will scattered throughout the park so visitors can have plenty to drink and munch on during the festival. Saturday's events start with the annual Kiwanis Club omelet breakfast at 6:30 in the morning at the pavilion. At 9:30 a.m., the children's activities kick off with a balloon lift off at the stage. This will be followed at 10 a.m. by the annual Golden Egg Hunt. Clues will be given at the stage for this year's hunters. The Chase the Chicken 5-K run/walk will begin at 8 a.m., with the Chick Chasers Kids Run starting at 9. There will also be a "Chickie Pen," for children's activities, games and contests. This event is the brainchild of Chamber President and Festival Chairman Mary Godwin. Search | Nevada County Picayune by date | Gurdon Times by date |
