Holiday Safety Tips Should Be Observed

Published Wednesday, July 2, 1997 in the Gurdon Times

Physicians and staff at Arkansas Children's Hospital remind parents as the Fourth of July approaches that children need guidance when using fireworks.

The following safety plan is recommended:

  • Never give fireworks to a small child.

  • Always have an adult present.

  • Read labels and follow directions.

  • Never aim fireworks at another person.

  • Never use fireworks indoors.

  • Never carry fireworks in your pocket.

  • Never re-ignite a firework that has failed to go off.

  • Have water handy especially if children are using sparklers.

  • Attend official fireworks celebrations. This is the safest way to enjoy fireworks.

  • Establish a safe viewing area outdoors. The best and safest view is at least 500 feet away from the display site.

  • Discuss guidlelines with your children. Review your safety rules together. If you do choose to purchase and ignite fireworks, establish yourself as your child's only source of fireworks.

  • Establish emergency procedures. Teach children to "stop, drop and roll" if their clothes catch fire; make sure they know how to call yuour local fire department and ambulance service; demonstrate how to extinguish fireworks using water or an extinguisher.
