Patient Tips Given

Published Wednesday, July 9, 1997 in the Gurdon Times

Most people want to comply with their doctor's orders, reports Arthritis Today, the Arthritis Foundation's national consmer magazine. But a number of factors can minimize benefits of prescribed treatments.

Some of these roadblocks are side effects of medications and forgetting to take or refill prescriptions when needed. Compliance also drops significantly when a doctor advises exercise, although it has been proven to reduce pain and increase range of motion for people with arthritis.

To increase your odds of following a treatment plan, the Arthritis Fondation recommends that you:

  • learn about the disease, treatment benefits, potential side effects and factors that motivate and discourage you;

  • ask questions about why treatments are recommended;

  • talk to your doctor fears or negative results you attribute to treatment.

For more information about arthritis, contact the Arthritis Foundation at 1-800-482-8858. The Arthritis Foundation is the source of help and hope for the nearly 40 million Americans who have arthritis. The foundation supports research to find ways to cure and prevent arthritis diseases and seeks to improve the quality of life for those affected by arthritis.
