Military NewsPublished Wednesday, August 18, 1999 in the Nevada County PicayuneThe Arkansas Army National Guard has announced recipients of rewards and decorations. Recipients of the Army Achievement Medal are Sergeant Joseph D. Snow of Arkadelphia, Specialist John E. Woods Jr., Sergeant Willie J. Young and Staff Sergeant Roland E. Byars of Prescott and Sergeant First Class Kevin D. McClure of Delight. Recipients of the Army Achievement Medal Two Oakleaf Clusters are Staff Sergeant Kevin E. Smith and Staff Sergeant Ricky L. Reyenga of Prescott. The Army Commendation Medal went to Specialist Mai E. McKinnon of Prescott and Specialist Kenneth G. Bradshaw of Gurdon. Promoted to Private Two and awarded the Army Achievement Medal One Oakleaf Cluster was Private Two John L. Belasco Jr. of Prescott. Other promotions include: Gabrial A. Sisney , Staff Sergeant, and Jonathan F. Tuckett, Staff Sergeant, both of Arkadelphia, Clinton A. Perkins, Specialist, of Gurdon, Levar D. Faulkner, Private First Class, Larry R. Inscore, Private First Class, Anthony D. Overton, Private First Class, Michael S. Stokes, Private First Class, and Ricky L. Hopkins, Staff Sergeant, of Prescott. U.S. Navy Airman Carlos Welch, son of Ivory and Kay Curry of Prescott, recently departed the Arabian Gulf while on a five-month deployment to the Western Pacific and Indian oceans and Arabian Gulf aboard the aircraft carrier USS Kitty Hawk, based in Yokosuka, Japan. While in the Arabian Gulf, Welch's ship made a port visit to Bahrain and three successful visits to the United Arab Emirates. The USS Kitty Hawk is scheduled to make port visits to Australia and Thailand before returning to Japan. Aircraft carriers like the USS Kitty Hawk are forward deployed around the world to maintain a U.S. presence and provide rapid response in times of crisis. They serve as a highly visible deterrent to would-be aggressors and if deterrence fails, offer the most versatile and powerful weapons available. Army National Guard Pvt. Lisa A. Hawthrone and Army Pvt. Alisha A. Fielding has entered basic military training at Fort Jackson near Columbia, S.C. During the eight weeks of training the soldiers will study the army mission and will receive instruction in drill and ceremonies, weapons, map reading, tactics, military courtesy, military justice, physical fitness, first aid, U.S. Army history and traditions, and special training in human relations. Hawthorne is the daughter of Donna F. and stepdaughter of Charles E. Wilson of Emmet. She is a 1999 graduate of Emmet High School. Fielding is the daughter of Sherry K. Cross of Prescott.
