PHS Cheerleaders Attend Camp

Published Wednesday, July 16, 1997 in the Nevada County Picayune

The 1997-98 Prescott High School cheerleaders who attended camp at UALR are, l-r, first row: Laura Williams and Jessie Ward; second row: Lindsey Franks, Kelley Wren, Kim Chambliss and Traci Graham; back row: Jana Barfield, Terri Vandiver (sponsor) and Johnna Bryan.

The Prescott High School cheerleaders recently returned from a National Cheerleaders Association summer camp. The camp was held at the University of Arkansas at Little Rock.

This camp attracted several squads throughout the state and surrounding states. The cheerleaders were evaluated every night on cheers and chants learned at the camp. They were also judged upon their ability to incorporate jumps and stunts into these cheers and chants. Each night after the evaluation each squad was awarded a ribbon according to their performance.

The Prescott varsity squad earned a superior ribbon at every evaluation throughout the week. This was a major achievement for the squad, because it has not been done since the squad began attending the camp at UALR three years ago.

The squad also received many other awards as well as nominations throughout the week.

They were nominated for the Herkie Team Award upon their leadership, values and teamwork; a Top Team Award nominee for technical skills involving the crowd; a Most Improved Award nominee for participation and improvement during the week; and a Superior Award winner for their superior performance while attending the camp.

They also competed in the Champion Chant run-off.

There were individual awards given to the entire varsity squad by their nomination to All-American try-outs.

Nomination for jumps included Traci Graham, Laura Williams and Lindsay Franks. Nomination for motion technique were Kim Chambliss, Jana Barfield, Johnna Bryan and Kelley Wren. Jessie Ward was nominated for leadership.

There were two recipients -- Graham and Ward -- of the All-American Team Award.

The cheerleaders would like to thank Terri Vanviver and Tammy Holland for their help as sponsors in preparing for camp.
