The Southern Wood Products Division (SWPD) of Potlatch recently received a national safety award from the Forest Products Association at an annual Forest Products Safety Conference in Portland, Ore.

The award was a one-year low frequency accident award for sawmills and planer mills with 500,000 hours worked in 1996. The award was given baseed on a one year performance survey of the Southern Division conducted by SWPD Safety Manager Zack Burks.

"I am excited about this award, and it was a pleasure to see how we measure up in safety within the sawmill and planer industry," Burks said. "The award is for the Southern Division employees, and Potlatch is very proud of their work."

SWPD vice president Dick Bullard praised the improved safety performance at the Southern, Bradley and Ozan Units. He acknowledged the employees' initiative and commitment to the safety committees' activities at each mill operation.

The Southern Wood Products Division sawmills and planer mills include the Southern Unit Sawmill and Planer Mill in Warren, the Bradley Hardwood Sawmill and Planer Mill in Warren and the Ozan Unit Sawmill and Planer Mill in Prescott.
