We had a good 47th annual homecoming at New Salem AME Church, where I attended when I was a girl. Rev. Delton Ray Gulley brought the morning message and Rev. Jerry Bishop brought the afternoon message. We did not have a large crowd, but the finances were good for the upkeep of the cemetery. Lunice Cole and son Pepper Cole paid the first $20. That is what each family paid for the upkeep: Corine Marges, $20; Odell Simpson, $20; Edd Sanders, $10; James Charles Young, $100; Olandis Tidwell, $10; Elmer Young family, $20; John William family, $10; Carter Marsh, $5; Thelma Woodfall, $20; Pugina Young's daughter, L.V. Gulley, $7 and her sister, Louise Henry, $20; the Purifoy and Madison family, $20; Milton Young, $35; Earnest Clark of Oakland, Calif., $30; Dave Clark, $10; and Berdine Lewis, $25. They are my cousins. Others responding were the Evans family, $40; Staple family, $25; Girtie Blake Young family, $35; Gladys Hubbard Hughey, $20; Linda Gulley and family, $20; Toney family, $20; Willie Leaks, $30; Robert Simpson, $20; Kendrick family $20; Carrie Jamerson, $20; Lunell Dismuke, $20; and Derris Ingram, $20.

Joyce Hopson stopped by to see me. I sure was glad to see her. She was a very smart girl. Sis. Mayme Lee Lilly's funeral was held Thursday, August 12, at Shiloh AME Church in Chidester. Bro. Christine Sims is the pastor. Rev. T.W. Adair was the evangelist. Rev. G.T. Blockman was the presiding elder of Camden and El Dorado District.

Mrs. Nara Hampton's funeral will be Thursday in Little Rock. She was the wife of Rev. R. J. Hampton. She was a very nice lady.

Gloria Elliott has been in the hospital in Texas. She has been a very sick person. Let's pray for Gloria. She was one of our teachers at Nevada. I understand she will not be able to work this term.

Mrs. Vera Purifoy has been on our sick list, but was able to attend her church Sunday.

Mrs. Girtie Blake's nieces and nephew visited her this week. They were James Charles, Fredia Catherine and Robert Earl Young and grandson from Oakland, Calif. The are really nice to Aunt Girtie. Henry Staple, her nephew, has been sick.

On Saturday, August 14, at 12:00 noon at the Western Sizzlin banquet room in Hope we celebrated the life of Roberta Paden Tidwell with a surprise dinner. This day was held in sweet memories.

Shirley and Rosie Brown, Rogers and Melissa Paden, Silvestir Toney and three of his sisters stopped by our house Monday evening. I sure was glad to see them.

There will be an alumni meeting at the Civic League Building September 2. This meeting is to elect officers for the school reunion 2000. Everybody who went to school at Oak Grove or taught there should mark your calendar for that date.
