Young Ends Program

Shaketha Young, granddaughter of Patsy Gillard and a 1997 honor graduate from Prescott High School, has recently completed the African-American Partnering Talent Academy Program in Conway.

This was a five-week program from June 7 through July 12. It was founded by Dr. Barbara Holmes. This program was held at the Unviersity of Central Arkansas to give entering African-American freshman headstart on college.

While there, Young obtained four credit college hours. She completed the freshman UNIV 1100 course and a college algebra class. She not only maintained a 4.00 GPA, but also had the highest grade in her college algebra class.

The program allowed recreational opportunities as well as educational. It gave the students a chance to get acquainted with each other in and outside of class.

On weekends they took field trips. One weekend they went to Memphis, Tenn., to visit the Loraine Hotel, where the Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr., was assassignated. Another trip they took was to Corpus Christi, Texas, to see the U.S.S. Lexington warship.
