Annual Festival A Huge Success

This weekend's 10th Annual Chicken and Egg Festival was another success.

Von Gordon, manager of the Prescott-Nevada County Chamber of Commerce said this year's event was well attended, with the crowds bigger than in recent years.

This in spite of temperatures nearing the century mark (100 degrees) and humidity not far behind.

The crowds, at times, waited until the evening hours to visit when it was somewhat cooler.

The athletic events were again some of the most popular for visitors to watch. With 20 teams in two softball tournaments, softball fans had plenty to watch.

Six teams were involved in the Chicks with Sticks women's softball tourney, with Eagles Distributing of Texarkana taking home the first place trophy.

A total of 14 teams were entered in the men's Fowl Ball tourney. When the dust cleared and sweat was finally wiped away, Team Extreme from Magnolia had captured the crown.

The Coop Hoop 3-on-3 basketball tourney has become one of the largest and most popular in Southwest Arkansas. This year, 51 teams entered in four divisions, giving basketball fans more of what they enjoy best.

In the men's 18 and over division 19 teams entered with high hopes. When all was said and done, the winner was Second to None of Ashdown, while Hot Springs sent down the second place crew, God is Able.

Nine teams vied for the crown in the 12 and under category, with Hawks from Texarkana taking the trophy.

A total of 15 squads were in the 13 and 14 bracket with Hope's Men in Black coming out the champions.

In the 15-17 series, eight teams battled with Prescott's own Boys From Woods the winners.

There were 17 entries in the antique car show, with a local man earning the bragging rights. Billy Haines' 1957 Ford Thunderbird was best of show. Michael Peters, of Arkadelphia, took second with his 1965 Ford Mustang, while Ford captured the third place finish as well as C.C. Barnett of Texarkana showed with his 1969 Mach I Mustang.

One of the most physically gruelling events each year in the festival is the Cock of the Walk weightlifting contest. This year 19 brave and hardy souls put their names in the hat in four divisions.

In the 150 pound and below class, Robert Crego won with a lift of 185 pounds. Eric Jackson was second at 135 and Casey Ward was third pressing 125.

Curtis Clark captured the 151-180 pound bracket pushing up 365 pounds, with John Parnell second with an effort of 350 and Robert Poole third at 315.

The 181-200 pound division was won by Harold White's 335 pound lift, with Chester Fort and Jimmy Hughes tying for second with efforts of 300 pounds each.

In the 211 pound and up slot, Allen White took the first place position with a lift of 405. Jonathan Sampson and Kyron Johnson tied for second with lifts of 350 pounds.

Venturing over to the tennis courts, where the action was really hot, John Ragni of Arkadelphia won the men's singles title. Brian Lowdermilk of Prescott was second, with local netter Kiley Burton third.

In men's doubles, the team of Gene Martin and Jonathan Martin of Prescott took the top spot, while Magnolia's Donnie Sneed and Rodney May were second. David Tollett and David Wilson of Nashville finished third.

On the women's side, Becky Parnell of Nashville took the single's title, with Susan DeBlack of Hot Springs finishing second and Prescott's Pat Virden third.

Jan Perry and Mary Ann Waters of Magnolia won the doubles event, with Prescott teams finishing second and third. Ann Stockton and Rita Stokes were second, while Maria Morrow and Joyce Martin were third.

In the women's "B" division, Audra Honey of Prescott and Sue May of Delight won, while Connie Martin and Betty J. Hampton of Prescott were second. Sherry Jordan and Vicki Clark also of Prescott finished third.

The mixed doubles event was won by Gene and Joyce Martin of Prescott, while Rodney May of Magnolia and Angel Gould of Alexander came in second. Donnie Sneed and Melanie Harris of Magnolia were third.

Matt Brannan of Prescott won the boys 15-18 bracket in the tennis tourney. Zackery Martin of Prescott came in second, while Scott Woods of Arkadelphia finished third.

In the doubles for boys 15-18, the tandem of Martin and Brannan captured the crown, while Jeremy Morrow and Cody McKinnon of Prescott were second. Adam Godwin of Hot Springs and Scott Wood of Arkadelphia were third.

Checking out the contests, Katie McCauley and Maci Glass won the egg toss.

In the cackling and crowing contest, three Prescott youngsters went home winners. Jordan Haynie was first, Levi Fitch came in second and Matthew Haynie was third.

The adult division was won by Robert Sharp of Hope, while Jimmy Brown of Prescott was second and Glenda Hughes of Prescott was third.

Austin Hawley of Prescott turned in the best decorated egg.

The coloring contest was broken down into four age divisions. In the 2-4 age group, Stephany Milam of Prescott was first, with Britney Myrick of Prescott second.

Tessa Webb of Prescott won the 5-6 bracket, while Austin Hawley took the 7-8 age group. Chase Haynes of Prescott was second with Jordan Haynie of Prescott finishing third.

The 9-11 slot was won by Lacey Webb of Prescott, with Marissa Wesson second.

There were some parents crowing and cackling after the Little Mister Rooster and Little Miss Hen pageants.

The first winner in the Little Mister Rooster contest, in the birth to age 3 segment, was Charles Williamson, son of Charles and Carol Williamson of Prescott.

The first runner up in the contest was Kellen Stockton, son of Nat and Beverly Stockton of Prescott. Second runner up was Austin Vaught, son of Kenneth and Leslie Vaught of Murfreesboro.

Zayne Dylan Otwell, son of Larry and Dana Otwell of Prescott won the age 4 and 5 division.

There were more entries in the Little Miss Hen contests. In the birth to age 3 contest, Sidney Brook Adkins, daughter of Andie and Mike Adkins of Prescott won.

First runner up was Samantha Brown, daughter of Herman and Bobbie Brown of Prescott. Tori Stanley, daughter of Sally and Tommy Stanley of Whelen Springs was second runner up.

In the age 4 and 5 division, Cassie Godwin, daughter of Mary and Edd Godwin of Prescott was the winner. Haley Harris, daughter of Joe Harris and Lorie Stricklin of Prescott, was the first runner up, while Shelbi Cottingham, daughter of Toby and Kim Cottingham of Prescott was the second runner up.

The age 6 and 7 contest was won by Kelsey Wren of Prescott. She is the daughter of Angie Wren. First runner up was Audrey Landrith, daughter of Hal and Evelyn Landrith of Prescott. The second runner up was Caitlin Stockton, daughter of Nat and Beverly Stockton of Prescott.

There was speed to burn in the 5K race Saturday morning, as Jackie Stevens took first place overall with his 18:28 finish. Kelly Knight was second at 18:41, while Ben Jone
