Lightning Kills WorkerBY JOHN MILLERPublished Wednesday, July 30, 1997 in the Gurdon Times Lightning killed a worker in the Clark County Industrial Park Wednesday afternoon. According to Clark County Sheriff Troy Tucker, James A. Bowen, 24, from Lawton, Okla., was struck by lightning while he and two others, Javier Ortega, 18, and Pedro Munoz, 40, of Midland, Texas, were working to cover equipment as a thunderstorm approached. Tucker said the CCSO got a 911 emergency call at 4:12 p.m. from Reynolds Metal Co. in the park, stating workers had been struck by lightning. He said the three had been working in a landfill area when the storm approached. As the storm drew nearer, the trio began covering up equipment before Bowen was hit by a bolt of lightning. The impact knocked Munoz and Ortega to the ground. All three were transported to Baptist Medical Center, where Bowen was pronounced dead by Clark County Coroner Scott White. Munoz and Ortega were treated and released. Search | Nevada County Picayune by date | Gurdon Times by date |
