A Gurdon man was arrested following the recent trial of another.

According to reports from the Gurdon Police Department, Cordell Quarles, 21, was charged with possession of a controlled substance, crack cocaine, with intent to deliver.

These charges stem from the arrest and conviction of Kevin Marks, who was recently sentenced to 35 years in prison for the same charges. According to City Marshal David Childres, Quarles was the go-between for Marks and drug buyers.

Following testimony at Marks's trial, Ninth Judicial District Prosecuting Attorney Henry Morgan issued a warrant for Quarles.

The suspect entered into a plea agreement and has been sentenced to three years in the Arkansas Department of Corrections.

DRUG ARREST

Tyrone "Bubba" Marks was arrested and charged with two counts of possession of a controlled substance, namely crack cocaine, with intent to deliver.

According to GPD reports, Marks was arrested without incident by the GPD. At the time of the arrest, the suspect was on parole from the Arkansas Department of Corrections on a robbery charge. Marks had been in the penitentiary for stealing $1,400 from a Jif-E-Mart store in Gurdon.

At the time, he also threatened the life of a Clark County Sheriff's Deputy and GPD officer.

The recent possession charges are the result of a cooperative investigation by the GPD, CCSO and Drug Task Force.

HOT CAR FOUND

A call to the GPD resulted in the discovery of a stolen car.

According to reports, on July 10, the GPD got a call concerning a car parked behind a vacant house on 10th Street across from the AP&L substation.

Officer Chris Harper investigated the incident, running a check on the vehicle through the National Crime Information Center (NCIC). The check returned stating the car had been stolen from a Hot Springs car lot.

The back glass in the car had been broken out and the ignition wires had been pulled so the car could be started with a screwdriver.

Fingerprints were taken and the GPD has a suspect in the case. Once the suspect has been picked up and been fingerprinted, the prints will be sent to the Arkansas State Crime Lab in Little Rock for comparison.

CAR VANDALIZED

A suspect's car at the Gurdon Police Department was vandalized in the early morning hours of July 10.

The vehicle, a white Mustang, was confiscated from Kevin Marks at the time of his arrest for selling drugs.

According to reports, several items were stolen from the vehicle, including a large double speaker box with two 12-inch woofer impact speakers, a double 100 watt amplifier and two two-inch tweeters along with three American Racing center caps for the car's chrome wheels.

On July 19, though, officer Harper stopped an Oldsmobile driven by Chris brown, who lives at 7th and Joslyn, following an earlier complaint about loud music.

After talking with Brown, Harper received permission to look inside the trunk of the Oldsmobile, where he found several items, including stereo equipment.

Brown was taken to the GPD.Further investigation into the case found Brown had the speaker box from the GPD burglary, along with two speakers from an earlier vehicle burglary. In the earlier burglary, more than $1,000 in stereo equipment was stolen.

Brown told officers where he got the items stolen. Sgt. Don Childres, along with officers Harper and Tony Pruitt were given consent to search the residence of Janice Russell on Highway 53 South.

All vehicles on the property and out buildings were included in the search.

The primary target of the probe was the vehicle and bedroom of Antonio Lomack also known as Tony Lomack, who resides at the house.

Officers found several stereo components which had been stolen from the burglary at the GPD and from earlier burglaries.

While searching Lomack's bedroom, officers found a white bag containing several rocks of an off-white substance believed to be crack cocaine. These items were sent to the Arkansas Crime Lab for testing. However, a field test done by Marshal David Childres on the substance showed it to be crack.

Lomack has been charged with breaking or entering, theft of property and possession of a controlled substance, crack cocaine.

His bond was set at 25,000, and Lomack was able to make bail. However, according to Marshal Childres, more charges are anticipated in the incidents.

THANKS GIVEN

Following a recent heart attack, Marshal Childres sends his thanks to those who remembered him and his family during the trying times they've gone through.
