County Students Do Well In SAU Competition

Ten business students at Southern Arkansas University in Magnolia recently attended the 1997 Phi Beta Lambda National Leadership Conference in Anaheim, Calif. Competing against over 2,000 business students from acroos the nation, SAU students won 11 national awards.

Darlene Tickle, a 1997 graduate of SAU, won first place for the Arkansas Phi Beta Lambeda annual business report. Tickle served as the 1996-97 Arkansas PBL president and was responsible for prepariang the comprehensive report of Arkansas PBL activities.

Tickle also won a second place award for SAU's American Enterprise progect and was named to Who's Who in Phi Beta Lambda. Tickle served as the 1996-97 National Southern Region vice president and coordinated numerous activities at the national conference.

She is a resident of Magnolia. She is the daughter of James and Bettye Pace of McNeil. Tickle will begin graduate courses at the University of Arkansas this fall.

Jeremy Carter, a senior management major from Junction City, received the State Newsletter Award of Merit. Carter served as 1996-97 Arkansas PBL state reporter and prepared two editions of the Arkansas PBL Press.

Carter also won fourth place for the chapter's annual business report. During 1996-97, he served as PBL chapter president at SAU and was responsibole for compiling the annual report of chapter activities.

He is the son of Mr. and Mrs. Larry Carter of Junction City.

The Arkansas PBL parliamentary procedure team won third place at the national conference.

The five-member team included Amber Hoover, Traci Hughes and Shannon Womble from SAU and Layne Johnson ahd Heshan Demel from Ouachita Baptist University. Hoover, a sophomore biology major from El Dorado, is the daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Doy Hoover.

Hughes is a junior accounting major from Prescott and the Arkansas PBL state parliamentarian. She is the daughter Mr. and Mrs. Michael Hughes of Prescott.

Womble, a sophomore acounting major from Prescott, is the daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Billy Womble of Prescott.

Shelley Browning, a junior business education major, placed fourth in information management. Browning is the daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Bill Browning of Emmet.

Don Sherman, a senior accounting major, placed seventh in management. Sherman served as the 1996-97 Arkansas PBL vice president of Region IV and was recently elected 1997-98 PBL president at SAU. Sherman and his wife, Teresa, reside in McNeil.

David Jackson, a 1997 graduate, competed in computer concepts. Jackson, a native of Prescott, now lives in Little Rock.

Amy Ramsey, a senior accounting major from Smackover, Carter and Sherman competed in the partnership with business project. Tracye Todd, a junior English major form El Dorado, Carter and Sherman competed in the community service project. April Hall, a freshman business major from Magnolia, Don Sherman and Shannon Womble served as voting delegates at the conference.

In recognition of the chapter's active participation in state and national programs, SAU PBL received a third place award for March of Dimes Project Help, the Gold Seal Award of Merit and the PBL Chapter Gold Key.

Phi Beta Lambda, the post-secondary division of Future Business Leaders of America, is one of the largest national associations for students in business, business education and other professional fields.
