Letter To The EditorPublished Wednesday, September 1, 1999 in the Nevada County PicayuneGood SamaritanOn August 5, 1999, while traveling with our church youth group to Eureka Springs, we made a rest stop at the Buzz-Buy convenience store on Highway 371. It was at this time that I made a couple of phone calls in which to finalize hotel and ticket arrangements. I had taken my billfold with me to the phone booth to have my phone card ready if needed. Luckily I was able to successfully use the toll-free numbers on hand. In my haste I placed my billfold on top of the phone booth out of my direct vision. Well, I'm sure you can guess what happened.It wasn't until we reached Harrison that I discovered my billfold's absence and immediately remembered where I had left it. I was frantic and distraught. No one could even remember the name of the store. I was so afraid that my act of negligence would spoil the whole trip for everyone. After some creative investigating we were able to contact the store. I was very pleased to find a very friendly and helpful lady by the name of Jean Hawthorne. After explaining my situation to Ms. Hawthorne she was pleased to tell me that someone had discovered the billfold earlier and had turned it in to her. While holding my breath, I asked Ms. Hawthorne to explore the contents of the billfold to see if my phone card and two credit cards were still inside. They were! In fact, everything was still there in its original place when I returned on Saturday to retrieve the billfold. Ms. Hawthorne secured the billfold until we returned from our trip. This saved me an extra trip and tons of worry. As for the Good Samaritan, I do not know who she is, only that she is a frequent customer at the Buzz-Buy (according to Ms. Hawthorne). May I say a generous word of thanks and extreme gratitude for this honest lady and to Ms. Hawthorne. I was all too prepared to have to immediately cancel my credit and phone cards and was almost ill in thinking about the worst case scenario.
