Access Road Project Depends On WeatherBY JOHN MILLERPublished Wednesday, August 27, 1997 in the Gurdon Times By JOHN MILLER Plans for the access road to the satellite industrial park on Interstate 30 near Arkadelphia have been sent to the city council. Members of the Clark County Industrial Council were given this update by project engineer Charles Summerford. He said the deadline for bids coming in is Sept. 4. At this time, he told the council, everyone will see if the estimates agree with the contractors. The bids will be opened at 10 a.m. Thursday, Sept. 4 at City Hall. Once the bids are open, the CCIC will know if it needs more money for the project or any other adjustments will have to be made for the road. According to Summerford, the weather will be the biggest potential problem for the project. He said if the weather holds, it should have taken six months to complete the task. On the other hand, he told the CCIC if the weather gets bad, the project may have to be delayed until spring 1998. The project originally called for a six-month time span for completion, but it took most of the time to get property owners to sign easements so the project could even get started. Summerford said contractors will have to use about 9,000 yards of dirt and gravel to fill an embankment to the road, while factory pipe will be utilized for drainage purposes. If the weather holds, he added, it will take four to six weeks to do the fill work. In the meantime, Summerford said the city and CCIC need to hope for stiff competition among the contractors bidding on the $1.2 million contract.
