Golf Tournament Held

American Cancer Society held its annual golf tournament August 9 at Prescott Country Club.

There were more participants this year than ever with 33 four-man teams entering.

The winning teams were:

  • Championship flight - Max Brown, Jeff Alexander, Ron Freer and Ronny Johnson from Gurdon; second place - Gary Chambliss, Ricky Reddin, Wayne Glass, and Chuck Smith from Prescott; and third place - Mike Poff from Smackover, Marvin Lindsey from Magnolia and Danny Beavert and Chris Beavert from Prescott.

  • First flight - Glen Childers, Donna Hamilton, John Yancey and Beverly White from Prescott; second place - Sammy Loe, Tim Loe, Bruce Baker and Ronnie Baker from Prescott; and third place - Julius Adams, Cory Adams and Greg Adams from Arkadelphia and Jim Franks from Prescott.

  • Second flight - Gene Cloer, Bill Jones, Jim Honea and Gary Lowdermilk from Prescott; second place - Scott Bright, Doug Barnes, Jim Gober and Jeff Gober from Prescott; and third place - Marc Wake, Johnny Wake, Kevin Grimes and John Brannan all from Prescott.

Tim Loe, Mike Poff, Ronny Johnson and Kyle McAfee were winners of the longest drive.

Closest to the hole winners were Wes Woodard, Jim Meador, Kyle McAfee and Jim Meador again.

Best dressed team was the "Hammer Team" of Timmy Grimes, Mike Cottingham, Mark Cottingham and Marty Reyenga.

Best dressed female golfer was Maude Hinton and best dressed male golfer was Tom Mitchell.

With so many players it took a lot of prizes and a lot of sponsors. Those sponsoring a hole were Nevada County Ambulance Service; NAPA Auto Parts; Dr. Charles Vermont; Prescott Motor Company; Bank of Delight; Bank of Prescott; Prescott Land and Timber; Van Oil Co.; McKenzie, McRae, Vasser and Barber; Dr. Michael Young; and Carl Dalrymple, P.A., Ltd.

Other corporate sponsors were Wilson Forestry Service, Firestone, Hines Trucking, Fikes Trucking, John Teeter and Godwin Farms.

The following sponsors were responsible for prizes and goodie bags: Potlatch, Inc., Exit 44 Truck Stop, Wolves Drive-In, Prescott Hardware, Barton and Barton, AllCare Pharmacy, Mitchell Jewelers, Holly's Health Mart, Buchanan Drug Store, Temple-Inland, Baker's Best Stop, Western Auto, Oliver's One Stop, Betty's Floral, Belinda McKinnon, George Cornelius, Linda Hicks, Melinda Faulkner, Jack Faulkner Body Shop, Spot Daniels, Stewart Electric Co., Red River Knitting Co., Pennington Screen Printing, Cindy Wake, Higginbothom Body Shop, Beautiful Accents, Patsy Womble, Williams Furniture of Delight, Prescott Flowers, Taylor's Big Star, Piggly Wiggly, Town and Country Fashions, Dr. Audie Teague, Gilbert Lumber and Supply, State Farm Insurance, Honeycutt Printing, TCBY, Fred's Dollar Store, Farm Bureau, Flywheel Pies and Nevada County Picayune.

Volunteers who helped with the tournament were Phyllis Stewart, Joan Barton, Mary Cottingham, Katherine Crain, Nita Kay Freeman, Al Dalrymple, Elizabeth Haltom, Max Hairston, Anice Ward and Marie Ely. The area director of the American Cancer Society for Nevada County, Bill Wright, was also here to help with the tournament.
