Eighteen Prescott Middle School fifth grade students have recently taken part in The Magic School Bus writing contest. This is the third annual writing contest for grades three, four and five. Contest sponsors are AETN, McDonald's and The Magic School Bus.

Under the direction of Mrs. Anne Franks, the students wrote a 300-word essay about a chosen topic related to the series The Magic School Bus. Ben Hale, son of Gene and Kim Hale, was chosen by a committee to be the winner. His essay was sent to AETN to be entered in the statewide contest.

State winners will be announced in the spring of 1998. Winners will receive a television for his or her classroom, as well as books and public recognition.

Ben received a gift certificate for a personal pan pizza. All student participants were treated to a popcorn party.

Students who participated included Kavonjalia Brown, Lakeisha Buford, Lauren Byrd, Katy Cox, Samantha Gordon, Ben Hale, Jon Henry, Trevor Hunt, Jesna Inlow, Courtney Jackson, Ira Mitchell, Brandon Reese, Tareva Smallwood, Nicole Stuart, Luther Stueart, Cody Thompson, Katy Wilson and Miccah Yates.

Ben Hale, son of Gene and Kim Hale, was the Prescott Middle School winner of "The Magic School Bus" writing contest. His essay has been entered in the statewide contest. State winners will be announced in the spring of 1998.

Mrs. Formby's fifth grade reading students just completed an independent novel study. They wrote an analysis essay of their novel and constructed a diorama or poster depicting a scene from the story.

Winners of the diorama/poster project are the novel they read are: Ashley Andrews , Miss Piggle Wiggle; Ben Hale, Noah's Ark; Nicole Stuart, Seven Kisses in a row; Heather Hawthorn, Little Red and the wolf; Tyler Yarbrough, Finding Buck McHenry; Matt Hodges, Wagon Train; Jade Bryan, Baby Sitters Club; Cody Brown, Magic School Bus; Chad McClurre, The Amazing Christmas Extravaganza; Ira Mitchell, Black Sea and Jon Henry, The Woman and the Willy Nilly.

Students at Prescott middle School were honored recently for scoring at the 80th percentile or above on the SAT-9 test that was given in the state of Arkansas in September. They scored as well or better than the top 20 percent of students in the United States.

The Prescott Middle School's Christmas tree was donated by Bonnie Smith Tree Farm. The tree was decorated by the fifth and sixth grade students.

Hillcrest residents enjoyed Christmas bingo when the Future Teachers of America organization of Prescott High School visited. Shown here are FTA members Ada Nixon, Sherri Smith, and Kirstina wilson. Other members attending were Beth Culpepper, Candi Smith, Demetria Gulley and Shelley Windham. Mrs. Terry Vandiver is the sponsor.


Governor Mike Huckabee met with the Nevada County Farm Family of the Year at the Governor's mansion in Little Rock when the Godwin family visited recently. In the photo are, l-4, Edd Godwin holding Cassie Godwin, Gov. Mike Huckabee, First Lady Janet Huckabee, Riley Godwin and Mary Godwin.
