Virgie Adelynne BarryPublished Wednesday, September 10, 1997 in the Gurdon TimesVirgie Adelynne Breashears Barry, 93, of Portland died Saturday, September 6, 1997, at Ashley Memorial Hospital in Crossett. Mrs. Barry was born in Plainview September 4, 1904. She was the youngest of 11 children born to Lemuel Cahzeel and Mary Ellen Hogan Breashears. She graduated from Central Baptist College in Conway in 1926 and from Ouachita Baptist University in Arkadelphia in 1928 with a degree in education. A devoted educator, she taught first grade in Plainview from 1928 until 1939, and third grade in Portland from 1952 until her retirement in 1969. She was a member of Arkansas Education Association, Ashley County Retired Teachers Association and Portland Baptist Church. Mrs. Barry was preceded in death by her husband, Samuel Clifton Barry, in 1974; a stepdaughter, Nell Barnwell, and nine brothers and sisters. She is survived by her children, Mary Jane Gee and Martha Rose Dolan of Crossett, Gary Clifton Barry of Portland, Rebecca Ann Baumgardner of Gurdon, Alice Faye Arnold of Horatio and one stepdaughter, Nancy Jordon of Sheffield, Ala; a sister, Effie Thompson of Danville; eight grandchildren; 14 great grandchildren; and two great great grandchildren. Funeral services were Monday at Portland Baptist Church with Bro. Jerry Shelby and Rev. Ted Grove officiating. Pallbearers were Barry Dolan, Wayne Baumgardner, Jim Fryar, Brad Gee, Clifton Barry, Corey Phillips and David Lester. Interment was in Portland Cemetery under the direction of Jones Funeral Home of Hamburg. Memorials may be made to Portland Baptist Church, P.O. Box 86, Portland, AR 71663.
