, chased by a pack of Devils who caught him, introducing him to the turf. Before he met the ground, though, Crabtree tried to throw the ball away.

This kept the game going as the zebras dropped another hanky for intentional grounding, putting the Panthers back to the 35 and taking away a down.

Two plays gained nothing, putting Fouke in a fourth and long situation with 0:36.1 showing on the clock, with no time outs remaining.

Crabtree went back and let the ball fly. It found Gurdon's backup quarterback, who also plays defensive back, Eric Allen at the 10.

Allen returned the pick to the 16 with 21 ticks left.

Toland dropped to a knee to end the game, but the Devils were flagged for illegal motion. While it cost Gurdon five yards, it also kept the game alive.

At least until the next snap when Toland took a knee, thereby allowing the buzzer to sound for the last time after two and a half hours of football.

Checking the stats, Gurdon went to the air 15 times, completing seven for 81 yards with one interception. Fouke three 11 passes, connecting on one for 30 yards and suffering a pick as well.

Gurdon punted three times, averaging 33 yards per punt, but gave up 29 total return yards. Fouke had five punts for 144 total yards, or a 28 yard per punt average, and gave up 17 return yards.

However, the Panthers saw the hankies fly 13 times for 69.5 penalty yards, while Gurdon was flagged seven times for 55 yards.

The Devils saw the ball hit the ground four times on fumbles, losing it once, while Fouke coughed it up five times, also losing one.

Charles was Gurdon's leading ground gainer, carrying the ball nine times for 78 yards. Hughes had eight carries for 49 yards, while Williams carried eight times for 43 yards. Toland carried twice for five yards, with Griffin gaining 11 yards on his carry. Gatlin managed 15 yards on one carry.

This gave the Devils a total of 30 rushes for 190 yards.

On the other side, the Panthers rushed the ball 47 times for 227 yards.

The Panthers ran 58 plays in the game, with Gurdon having 45. Fouke also had more first downs than the Devils, 16-15.

But Gurdon's passing attack gave the Devils more total yards than Fouke at 271 to 257.

This week, the Devils open their home season as the Lake Village Beavers come to Gurdon.

The Beavers opened with a 44-6 loss at Hamburg Friday, Sept. 5.

Kickoff at Gus Brown Field is set for 7:30 p.m.
