Farm Bureau Sponsors Rural Health Program

Published Wednesday, September 10, 1997 in the Nevada County Picayune

The Arkansas Farm Bureau Federation and the Statewide Committee on Rural Health and Safety are sponsoring a statewide Safety Promotion Poster contest. The contest will run in conjunction with the National Farm Safety and Health Week, September 21-27.

Themes for the posters should be related to some aspect of safety such as: farm machinery, chemicals, home, fire, bus, tornado, poisoning, etc.

Contest objectives are to promote safety through publicity received on posters in the county contest and to educate students on the importance of safe behavior.

While health and safety promotion is the overall theme, other criterea is necessary.

In order to be considered in the Nevada County Fair and state competition, the student's name, address, social security number, grade, school, county, and parents' names and telephone number must be written on the back of the entry. Posters without proper identification will be disqualified.

There are two categories of competition: students in grades one, two and three and students in grades four, five and six of Arkansas primary schools (only one entry per student per year).

Only two entries per county (one in each category) are eligible for state competition.

The entry must be prepared on poster board not exceeding 25 inches by 35 inches.

The entry can be three dimensional (this is to allow participants to use theme-related objects on their posters).

An official of the Nevada County Farm Bureau must certify the entry as authentic work by an eligible student by signing and dating the back of each poster. Adults should not do the work for the students.

First place winner in each category will receive a $100 savings bond, and the second place winner in the category will receive a $50 savings bond. Prizes on the county level will be $10 for first prize, $7.50 for second prize and $5 for third prize.

Entries must be submitted at the Nevada County Fairgrounds September 14 between 1:30 and 4:00 p.m. and from 8:30 and 10:00 a.m. Monday, September 15.

This is locally sponsored by the Nevada County Farm Bureau, Women's Committee. Dawn McLelland is the chairman.
