Chronicles Entire Bill Of Rights, People Involved In Action

Published Wednesday, September 10, 1997 in the Nevada County Picayune

An exhibit depicting people and events that sparked the Bill of Rights and related amendments to the U.S. Constitution is now on view in the lobby of Prescott High School. Admission is free.

The Bill of Rights exhibit celebrates the bicentennial of the passage of the first 10 amendments to the U.S. Constitution. Viewers see the not- too-distant past and see history in the making through rare photographs, illustrations and other visual highlights of events bearing directly on our constitutional freedoms.

Brief accompanying text explains some of the controversies surrounding the passage of these amendments, bringing vividly to mind similar issues that confront us today: Why not punish criminals in the same way they treat their victims? Why allow some groups to exist? Why make an already brutalized victim appear in court to relive potentially traumatizing events? By becoming acquainted with the basic freedoms guaranteed us under the Bill of Rights, visitors to the exhibit will have these and other concerns placed in perspective.

The Bill of Rights exhibit was developed by the Pennsylvania Humanities Council. It will be on display in the lobby of Prescott High School until September 18. Viewing times are from 8:00 a.m. until 3:00 p.m.
