Jimmy Stockton Earns Scholarship For ServicePublished Wednesday, September 10, 1997 in the Nevada County PicayuneJimmy Stockton of Prescott has been named a 1997 National Service Scholar and awarded a college scholarship of $500 by the Corporation for National Service in recognition of an outstanding record of community service. The award matches a local scholarship of $500 provided by Kiwanis of Prescott. Launched last fall by President Bill Clinton, the National Service Scholars program challenges communities and local organizations to raise at least $500 for a junior or senior in his local high school, which the federal government then matches. School principals select scholarship recipients. Stockton is among 1,690 first-year scholarship winners announced by President Clinton in his recent radio address on community service. "Next year it will be even bigger," he said. "Our goal is to make this program available in every high school." Stockton graduated from Prescott High School and plans to attend Southern Arkansas University. High schools and local organizations interested in next year's National Service Scholars program may call 202-606-5000, exttension 293. The Corporation for National Service is a public-private partnership that administers three national service initiatives - AmeriCorps, National Senior Service Corps and Learn and Serve America. The National Service Scholars program is administered by Citizens' Scholarship Foundation of America, Inc.
