Districts Annual Report To Be Made Public

The Gurdon School District will make its annual report to the public in a meeting Monday night. The administration will be detailing progress toward accomplishing program goals, accredation standards and proposals to correct deficiencies.

In a report to The Times, the district reports that it has met the state standards.

In matters to improve communications between the school and the community, the district has these goals:

  • Parent/teacher conferences will be conducted.

  • Annual public meeting will be held.

  • Annual report to public will be published.

  • Members of the Student Council will give monthly reports to the school board on activities a the high school.

  • Parents are required to sign form stating they have received and read the student handbook.

  • Active elementary PTE and MTE program.

  • Primary school sends home communication folder on a weekly basis.

  • Teachers present update to school board on individual programs during the regular school year.

  • Local bank publicize student activities.

  • School district prints newsletter during the regular school year.

    To improve basic skills, Gurdon School District:

  • IPCF program sponsored by International Paper Company is ongoing.

  • New keyboarding class has been added at middle school.

  • second computer lab has been added at the high school.

  • Summer school is offered to grades K-4.

  • Reading recovery program has been extended to full time.

  • Alternative school will be operational this school year.

  • High school computer lab has computers.

  • Reading recovery program for first grade has been added.

  • Work place readiness class is offered at high school.

  • Principles of Technology II class has been added to high school curriculum.

  • Summer program was offered to students in Albebra I.

    To encourage maximum attendance at all grade levels, the district:

  • Plans special recognition that will be provided to students with perfect attendance. Certificates will be awarded and pictures will be given to local newspaper for publication.

  • Each grade in the primary and middle schools with the highest percentage of attendance will be rewarded with a special trip at the end of the second semester.

The district will provide programs for staff development, and all staff members are required to receive 30 hours of inservice training. School will be dismissed early one day per month for staff development activities.

On the accreditation report for the 1996-97 school year, Gurdon Primary School was accredited, but Gurdon Middle School and Gurdon High School each was cited.

At the middle school a health teacher was not certified. The district has instructed the teacher to take additional hours.

At the high school, a Spanish teacher was not certified. The school has satellite capability to teach course.
