Arthritis Help Is Now Available

Published Wednesday, September 24, 1997 in the Gurdon Times

The current excitement surrounding alternative treatments does not alter the reality that many of the nearly 40 million Americans with arthritis rely heavily on prescription and over-the-counter medications to manage pain and lessen joint destruction.

To help people make wise decisions about the medications available to treat arthritis, Arthritis Today, the Arthritis Foundation's national consumer magazine, has published a biennial drug guide. This guide gives readers the tools they need to understand the medications they take and can be used as a starting point for discussion with their health-care provider.

The drug guide explores the typical dosages, possible side effects, and cautions and contraindications of more than 200 prescription and over -the-counter medications taken every day to battle the overwhelming effects of arthritis and related conditions.

This year's drug guide features:

  • + 20 medications that have hit the market in the past two years;

  • + special drugs available to treat osteoporosis, fibromyalgia and gout;

  • + information on ulcers and topical analgesics; and

  • + iips on how to work with your doctor to find the best medication and dosage for you.

"While Arthritis Today is excited about the future promise of alternative treatments, it's important to focus on the reality for people with arthritis," said Greg Hatcher, chairman of the board, Arthritis Foundation, Arkansas Chapter. "They need information they can apply to their lives here and now."

Arthritis Today is committed to giving its readers the information they need to manage their condition and improve the quality of their lives. The magazine aids the Arthritis Foundation in providing help and hope for people with arthritis across the nation, including 417,000 in Arkansas.

The Arthritis Foundation is the source of help and hope for the nearly 40 million Americans who have arthritis. The foundation supports research to find ways to cure and prevent arthritis diseases, and seeks to improve the quality of life for those affected by arthritis.
