EMMET READERS Four years ago, Dr. Gene Ross, superintendent of the Emmet School District, wanted to enhance the reading performance in the elementary school children, thus increasing the scores on standardized test. The Southwest Education Cooperative did not provide such services for training of teachers at the time. Dr. Ross gained access, through teacher leaders and specialist Linda Haynie, to receive services through Dawson Education Cooperative in Arkadelphia, which offered the service. The new technique Dr. Ross chose for Emmet school was Reading Recovery. This program was started in New Zealand by Marie Clay. Reading Recovery is targeted for first graders who have the potential for becoming excellent readers. Over the past three years, reading scores haved improved 42%, as stated at the recent report to the public. These scores are due impart to the close working of Reading Recovery teacher Pat Loe and first grade teachers, Kathy Hooper and Lorrie Quilly. "Emmet School is very proud of its faculty and administrator on the great jobs they are doing to provide a quality education for thier students," according to a news release from the school.
