Hughes Runs Over Curley Wolves; PHS Now 0-3 After 30-22 Loss (cont)Published Wednesday, September 24, 1997 in the Nevada County Picayunethe 12 and disaster struck. If the Curley Wolves had been able to move the ball away, then things may have been different. If Johnston had passing room. If the offensive line could have kept the Gurdon defense off Johnston. If the Wolves had punted. If... Prescott made a total of 10 first downs in the game while Gurdon made 15. Van Hook was Prescott's leading rusher with 51 yards in 11 tries. He scored one TD and a two-point conversion. The game's leading rusher, of course, was Hughes of Gurdon with 80 yards. Fifty-nine of those came in the last half. Charles rushed 12 times for 42 yards. Williams rushed nine times for 26 yards. He rushed for 21 yards the last half and scored two touchdowns in his efforts. Johnston attempted 19 passes for Prescott, completing three of them for 99 yards. He threw one TD pass. Johnston had 14 incomplete passes and had two intercepted. Gurdon's Toland attempted 11 passes, completing two for 37 yards. He had one interception. Prescott completed the game with a total of 161 yards. Gurdon finished with 194. The Curley Wolves were penalized seven times for 35 yards. Gurdon was penalized sevent times for 60 yards. This week the `real' season starts. The Wolves will host the Bismarck Lions to open the 7AA Conference. Are the Wolves ready? Probably. This is a smart group of players. They have played their hearts out and lost three games, all three against worthy opponets. It's fair to say they have learned from this experence. It will be left up to them to execute the right plays and not make the mistakes they made in the first three games. The Wolves have had a ton of problems besides making mistakes. Injuries have plagued this year's team. Friday night it looked like there were enough injured players on the sidelines to form their own team, and that's the way it's been since before the first game. Fridy night they should be ready. The Lions will be coming to town to revenge last year's loss to the Wolves, but this home turf. The Wolves will be ready for them. Search | Nevada County Picayune by date | Gurdon Times by date |
