Muleriders Hosting Rodeo October 2-4Published Wednesday, October 1, 1997 in the Nevada County PicayuneThe rodeo team at Southern Arkansas University in Magnolia will host its annual rodeo on Thursday through Saturday, October 2-4, at the Columbia County Fairgrounds. The rodeo will begin at 7:30 each night. College teams from the National Intercollegiate Rodeo will compete and will include schools from Arkansas, Missouri, Alabama, Georgia, Tennessee and Michigan. The SAU team is comprised of 23 members and will feature several award winners from last year. Jamie Reel, a senior agriculture-business major from Lawrence, Kans., won the girls' all-around cowgirl last season. On the men's side, Anthony Peel returns from SAU. Peel, a junior pre- physical therapy major from Anderson, S.C., was named all-around cowboy and finished first in steer wrestling. Steven McElroy is a sophomore agricilture-business major from Benton. He won first in team roping last year. Cain Butler won second place in steer wrestling. Butler is a senior agriculture education major from Oxford, Ga. Events at the rodeo include bull riding, bareback, barrel racing, calf roping, goat tying, team roping, calf roping, break-away roping, saddlebronc riding and steer wrestling. Special events will be held each evening. Thursday night will feature the goat dressing contest, Friday night will be the celebrity pig tote and the kids calf scramble will be held on Saturday. Tickets for the rodeo are $5 for adults, $3 for SAU students with ID's, $3 for youth age 7-12. Admission is free for children under six. For more information about the SAU rodeo, call 235-4343.
