Prescott Sinks Bismarck; Prepares For Big Scrap (cont)Published Wednesday, October 1, 1997 in the Nevada County Picayunea bootleg. Johnston faked to his left and went back, fooling the Bismarck defensive line enough to get the pass away. Morrow caught it in the end zone for the TD, but Fountain's PAT missed for the score to remain 20-6 with 9:41 left in the game. Bismarck started once more trying to catch up-and couldn't succeed. After one first down the Lions attempted a pass on fourth and 10 at the Prescott 49. Brawley fumbled, the ball, however, with Jarrod Miller recovering the ball for the Wolves at the Bismarck 47. On first down Jernigan gained six yards to the 41, then Woodley got the first down with a sweep run at the Bismarck 16. Johnston again gave the ball to Woodley, who went to his left on another sweep. He handed the ball to Fountain and by the time the Bismarck defense recovered, it was too late. Fountain scored the TD and kicked the extra point to make the final score 27-6. Bismarck's next possession was stopped by an interception by Johnston. Starting at their own 43, the Curley Wolves stopped at the Bismarck two- yard line. They didn't stall. They stopped to let the clock run out, giving Prescott its first win, but more importantly, getting a conference win. Prescott had eight first downs during the fourth period to Bismarck's one. They rushed for 105 yards and Johnston passed for 45 more. The main thing is, they kept the ball away from Bismarck. The Wolves had a total of 15 first downs to Bismarck's 17. Van Hook rushed 13 times during the game for 69 yards. Woodley rushed four times for 40 yards; Duke rushed eight times for a net of 35 yards; and Jernigan rushed five times for 33 yards. While Johnston only passed eight times, Brawley attempted 36 passes, 21 incompleted and two interceptions. Turnovers were almost even. Prescott had four and Bismarckhad three. Prescott was penalized six times for 90 yards while Bismarck was penalized twice for 20 yards. This week the Curley Wolves will host the Nashville Scrappers, who are undefeated this season. However, the Hope Bobcats managed a tie against the Scrappers. After last week's game, it appears the Curley Wolves may have a better chance than most thought they would have at the beginning. Let's hope so. Prescott's band will be performing big time Friday night at halftime. They put on an outstanding show. The FBLA members will be having a fish fry from 4:00 to 7:00 Friday night. For those who enjoy good fried catfish with French fries, coleslaw, onion, hush puppies and iced tea, this is a treat you don't want to miss. The cost is $6 for adults and $3 for children under 12. All take-outs are $6 each. Search | Nevada County Picayune by date | Gurdon Times by date |
