From GMSPublished Wednesday, October 1, 1997 in the Gurdon TimesWe sure did enjoy the cooler weather last week, in fact we saw several jackets and heard comments like I'm freezing several times from various students. We are not hard to please, we just want to be comfortable. We are collecting pennies, in fact, we are trying to collect 1,000,000 (one million). Homerooms have gallon milk jugs to hold pennies as the collection continues. Mrs. Whitlock's class has already filled one gallon jug and started on another one. We plan to use the collection to purchase equipment for our new Middle School. Just so everyone has something to do all times, Mrs. Bullard agreed to let Mrs. McBride roll pennies, and Roll and Roll. A gallon jug holds a lot of pennies and takes time to roll them, but Mrs. McBride did such a good job, she'll probably become the Official Penny Roller. Mrs. Blanton surprised the teachers with a wonderful chocolate cake, at least I heard it was delicious, as it was all gone when I found out a cake was in the lounge. (B00 Hoo). Mrs. Clingan is giving the 8th graders that bring their lunch a trial to see if they can eat, clean up and get out of her room in time for her next class. So far, so good. Students enjoy the treat, as well as the time to visit with one another. Thursday we enjoyed a powder puff football game. The High School Student Council sponsored a fund raiser for Kelly Craig, a student that has cancer. All three schools enjoyed the activities at the football field. High School students made up the teams, oh did I tell you they were all girls? Coach Pace might need to talk to a student by the name of Beasley to consider for his, team as she scored three touchdowns and could outrun her opponents. Nothing was missing during the game, as the cheerleaders were high school boys. Mrs. Clark, you might want to consider some new members to your squad. Mrs. Clark is the Sr. High Cheerleader sponsor. She is also the 7th and 8th grade English teacher at the Middle School. The band was outstanding. Their music just puts us all in the mood to cheer for our teams. Band members, you are great and we are very proud of you and really appreciate your hard work and dedication. Of course, we cannot forget Mr. Burson and his continued encouragement to those who did not believe they could play an instrument, and now they know they can. Also, we welcome back Mr. Wimberly. What can we say except, it sounds good, Oh Yea, it sounds good. Nothing but success is expected. We had a good afternoon, and we want to express to Kelly that our prayers are with you and we love you. Mrs. Green,Jr. High School Cheerleader sponsor, did an excellent job for a Pep Rally conducted at the football field, following the Powder Puff game. She had a rap contest, which a list of words had to appear in each rap. The Pep Steppers, lead by Mrs. Bulter, did a great rap and looked super in their matching shirts. Mrs. Roe and O'Brien Moss provided the sounds of rap while Norris Glenn recited the rap words. Uthel Gatlin and Mrs. Clingan provided the Entertainment. We were all shocked at the talent that had been hidden all of this time. Rayanne Ross and Claya Calley did a great job performing their rap. The Jr. High football team won the Spirit Stick, for cheering the loudest. Win or loose, their are the champs. Mrs. Karr has a Book Fair going on this week. Books, posters, and various fun items are available for purchase. Students are enjoying the opportunity to buy some items they have not found at other places. Mrs. Clingan expresses a big thank you to Jake Plyler and Heath Griffin for all of the help they do in getting the sound equipment all ready for the various functions conducted at our school. (as well as an extra thank you to Lyndi Esclante and Stephanie Kilts for assisting on Thursday) Well, better get back to work, just remember we depend on your support and appreciate your help and concern while we make those Classy Moments at GMS.
