Teacher Released From ContractBY JOHN MILLERPublished Wednesday, October 1, 1997 in the Gurdon Times By JOHN MILLER Two items were discussed in a special meeting of the Gurdon School Board, Thursday, Sept. 25. The board accepted the resignation of a second grade teacher and to allow the superintendent to accept the low bids on an asphalt contract for the Gurdon High School parking lot. Bobby Smithson, Gurdon superintendent, asked the board for permission to accept the low bid for the asphalt so the GHS parking lot can be repaired. He said the contractor is ready to pack the SB-2 gravel, and hopes to get started laying asphalt before the next regular meeting of the board on Oct. 21. Smithson said the district needs to get started on the asphalting before the cold weather begins. He expects the bids to be between $20,000 and $30,000. It was also brought up the Gurdon Elementary School lot is in bad shape, with potholes throughout. Smithson said once the GHS lot is finished, the GES lot will be next on the list for repairs. Sherry French tendered her resignation to the board. She had been offered a position in Arkadelphia and asked to be released from her contract with Gurdon. Smithson said it is his philosophy to accept resignations because the person in question is wanting to work somewhere else anyway. In this case, however, he said, French has three children in the Arkadelphia school system and wants to be near them. She was originally hired July 15, 1997, by the Gurdon board. However, her contract wasn't signed by the district until September, and she hadn't signed it at the time of her resignation. Smithson said she should be released as per her request and the district advertise the position. Search | Nevada County Picayune by date | Gurdon Times by date |
