Pee Wee Team Playing GreatBY JOHN MILLERPublished Wednesday, October 8, 1997 in the Gurdon Times By JOHN MILLER Even though the Go-Devils didn't play Friday night, there was Gurdon football last week. The pee wee football team again traveled to Arkadelphia to tangle with teams there and posted a 22-12 win over the Red team. Gurdon scored first when Anthony McPeak rushed in for a score, with Hunter Johnson crashing in for the two-point conversion. This gave the Purple squad an 8-0 lead. However, the ensuing kickoff was returned for a touchdown. But the Gurdon defense held and maintained its lead at 8-6. Taking over again, the Gurdon crew began moving the ball, but a fumble allowed the Red crew to take the lead, as the defense picked up the loose ball and took it in for a score. This gave the Arkadelphia team a 12-8 advantage. The conversion attempt was a failure. In the second half, the defense forced a fumble. This gave the offense the incentive it needed as McPeak again ran for six. His second score gave Gurdon a 14-12 lead. The conversion was no good. The Red team offense was completely unable to move the ball against the wrecking crew Gurdon defense. Once again, after Gurdon got the ball back, Marcell Johnson rushed for the touchdown, with the conversion made good by McPeak. Gurdon now led 22-12 and time was running out for the Red team. Josh Frisby made sure time was on Gurdon's side as he knocked the ball loose from the Red quarterback and saw Darron Williams recover the fumble. Gurdon's offense ran the clock out for the 22-12 win. However, when Gurdon played the White team, the results were different as the purple crew fell 12-0. Gurdon's defense played a solid game, but turnovers by the offense allowed the White team to score twice. In fact, a two fumbles in the game led to the only scoring done, with the White defense scoring one of the touchdowns. The White team was the top squad in the league. Gurdon played a great defensive game in keeping the White crew from scoring but one touchdown. Search | Nevada County Picayune by date | Gurdon Times by date |
