From GMSPublished Wednesday, October 8, 1997 in the Gurdon TimesWow, What a Week! We really were busy last week at Gurdon Middle School. The Student Council conducted the first assembly for the year Tuesday. Several students assisted in the initiation of the new teachers and staff member. Mrs. Hogue, secretary, was greeted on stage with students trying to make her feel at home by needing a Band-Aid for a broken nail, change for a dollar, needing to call mama, and a teacher bringing in two girls who were fighting. Of course all of this took place about the same time. Lyndi Esclante, president of the Student Council, asked Mrs. Hogue if this was a typical day for her, but before an answer could be given, Esclante informed her that "We are not as bad as that" and welcomed Mrs. Hogue as part of the team at GMS. Mrs. Morehead met three students of which two thought her name was Mrs. Littlefoot. When the third student told the other two the name was Moorehead, then the others wanted to know if she divorced Mr. Littlefoot, and from there things got even more confusing. Esclante finally convinced the students that there never was a Mrs. Littlefoot, and gave Mrs. Moorehead a hearty welcome to the team. Mrs. Clark was absent from the assembly, but the students had worked on a skit for her and were allowed to present it in her absence. Two cheerleaders were cheering when another cheerleader rushed on stage and told the other two to run and see what was coming in. To everyone's surprise, Darrin Gilchrist entered the stage dressed as a cheerleader to try to make Mrs. Clark believe she had no problems to worry about, as he would be the cheerleader for the future. He did a cheer, which brought applause and laughter from the audience. Coach Taylor was absent from the assembly, too, so he will have to have a special time next month. Be on Guard. A welcome was given to Mr. Bearden and Mr. Wimberly. Mr. Wimberly was presented with the GHS Band of the Future, when about 14 students entered playing whistles, drums, rattlers, and other unusual instruments. Mr. Wimberly and Mr. Bearden were given an opportunity to see who could eat 13 crackers and then sing Jingle Bells first, as both teachers said they could not whistle. Mr. Wimberly was the winner. They were given an orange drink to see who could drink all of the drink from the bottle first, Mr. Wimberly was the winner for that also. Oh, by the way, did I mention that those were BABY BOTTLES they were drinking from? Such a sight. They were good sports about the opportunities given to them. Citizens students were honored with certificates: fifth grader Cameron Kennedy; sixth grader Kevin McPeak; seventh grader Claya Calley; and eighth grader Wes Boyce will be going for a pizza lunch with Mr. Alexander. The October assembly will be on the 31st. It will be a costume contest. One of the judges will be Matt Mosler of channel 7. We are looking forward to his visit. We were saddened to hear about Mrs. Gattis's husband's accident and do hope everything will go well for him. Although she is no longer our secretary, she will always be a special person to those whose lives she touched. So far the "lunch bunch" in Mrs. Clingan 's room is working out real well. The students are keeping things clean and really seem to be enjoying the "togetherness" they share. We are proud of our junior Go-Devils winning their game Thursday. The pep rally was great. As usual, Mrs. Green's squad excelled. We look forward to a new week, new ideas, new adventures, new dreams, and, more importantly, new achievements. We are working steady as we continue to make those Classy Moments at GMS. Search | Nevada County Picayune by date | Gurdon Times by date |
