County's Sheriff's Office Goes To The DogsPublished Wednesday, October 8, 1997 in the Gurdon TimesClark County Sheriff Roy Tucker and Officer Mark House visited Central Arkansas Development Council Monday, Sept. 28. Sheriff Tucker presented a program, `Prevention Through Education' to those present, which included several adults from the Gurdon Senior Adult Center next door and 17 Head Start children. He spoke about the dangers of drugs, good and bad touches and other safety measures. Tucker presented each child with an honorary deputy's badge and coloring book to reinforce his lesson. McGruff, the Crime Dog, gave a surprise visit at the end of Tucker's talk. All the children got to shake hands with McGruff. Officer Mark House introduced everyone to his best friend and fellow officer, Pappy. Pappy is a German shepherd the Clark County Sheriff's office acquired a few years ago from Germany to help in the search and control of drugs. Because Pappy was trained in Germany, he responds to German commands. House is the sole handler of the very special and valued K-9 member of the force. Pappy and Officer House gave a demonstration of how Pappy sniffs out drugs. He gave Pappy commands to demonstrate how well Pappy is trained. A question and answer session followed.
