Littering Costly For Two

Littering proved to be expensive for two Gurdon residents.

Lucille Beasley, 36, and Loretta Peoples, 28, both of Gurdon, were charged with littering and fined $325 each for their offenses.

According to reports, Beasley was ticketed on Sept. 22, while Peoples was given her citation on Sept. 9.

Jim Caldwell, street superintendent, found trash at 10th and Linden with Peoples' name on some of the refuse. He turned this information over to the Gurdon Police Department, who issued the citation.

Gurdon Mayor Rick Smith lauded the GPD for its efforts in writing the littering tickets. "I'm proud of the way they handled it," he said.

Smith said the city is following up on its clean up program. At the September meeting of the Gurdon City Council, the city's governing body voted to send letters to those with trash bins on the right of ways.

He said many of these trash bins are unsightly as the garbage is being placed by the streets. This constitutes a health hazard, Smith continued, and is unsanitary.

Bags, many times, get torn allowing the garbage inside to blow around. Loose garbage is also harder for the sanitation crews to pick up.
