/2 cup dark molasses; and 1/2 teaspoon peppermint extract.

Glaze ingredients: 3 cups confection sugar; 3 tablespoons water; 3/4 teaspoon peppermint extract; and yellow and red food coloring.

Sift flour with baking powder, salt and ginger. In large mixing bowl, cream butter, sugar, egg yolk and peppermint extract until light and fluffy. Beat in molasses. Stir in flour mixture.

Refrigerate several hours or overnight.

On lightly floured surface roll out dough a fourth at a time to 1/8-inch thickness. Using a paper pattern of a real leaf, cut around with paring knife to make leaf shapes.

Bake at 350 for 8 minutes, or until edges are slightly browned. Remove to wire racks and cool completely.

For glaze, combine in small bowl confection sugar, water and extract; blend smooth. Stir in a few drops of yellow and red food coloring to make an autumn orange color. Spread glaze on cookies. Place on cookie racks in single layer. Let dry at room temperature.

Store in covered container.

GROWING OLD

Growing Old is something everyone must face. But doesn't it seem that you or your friends who have a number of interests outside employment seem to take longer to feel old.

One problem a lot of people face in their early years is the lack of time or energy to develop the hobbies and interest they want. Their job may be too demanding, their hours too long, or their interests fade with the hours of the day. For one reason or another, they never find an interest to keep them company.

If you are one of those people who didn't make the time or have the interest to develop a hobby at an early age, it is not too late. The Nevada County Extension Homemakers Clubs offer to both men and women an avenue of fellowship and learning throughout clubs within the county.

Attend EHC s Fall Council meeting on Tuesday, October 21, at the First United Methodist Church and meet a terrific group of people with interests to share.
