Literacy Program Expands With HSU AidPublished Wednesday, October 15, 1997 in the Nevada County PicayuneSouthwest Arkansas Development Council (SWADC), Literacy Program in Nevada County has announced a partnership with Henderson State University in Arkadelphia. The two have developed into one of the greatest opportunities for adults to receive free individualized tutoring for a number of skills. SWADC, Literacy outreach worker Teri Hughes reports there are more than 40 HSU education majors who have volunteered to tutor in the Prescott literacy tutoring room and Senior Citizen Center in October, November and early December. Some of the topics they are offering include: Family reading, a series of workshops for adults who desire to help young readers develope into confident and independent readers. Job readiness and workplace skills, to cover areas like finding the right job, interview practice, filling out the application, time management, customer service and others. Adopt a kindergarten, in cooperation with the Prescott Elementary kindergarten, adults will practive their reading skills while sharing stories with young children in the classroom. Map reading and travel planning, lets adults practice planning local and long distance trips, make travel plans using the Arkansas Tourism packet and an Arkansas highway road map; plus an atlas. Other public maps of malls, hospitals and diagrams will be studied to help show you where you are and find where you want to go. Basics on computers, lets adults get hands-on experience using a computer while they learn important terms and simple operating procedures. These sessions will be led by a certified business education teacher and other volunteers. Math skills for the workplace, adults can brush up on basics including fractions, percents and math stories, measurements and other work related math skills. Driver's examination preparations , prepare for the written Arkansas driver's license exam. Other programs including reading, writing and spelling, basic literarcy skills improvement in private, confidential settings. Registeration is going on now.
