Three New Historic Volumes Being OfferedPublished Wednesday, October 15, 1997 in the Gurdon TimesThe Arkansas Historic Preservation Program, an agency of the Department of Arkansas Heritage, is offering three new volumes in its series of historic contexts on Arkansas subjects, AHPP director Cathy Slater announced October 8. The contexts are histories of various aspects of state history used to support multiple-property nominations of Arkansas properties to the National Register of Historic Places, the country's official list of historically significant properties. The new volumes are `The Promised Land': The Cherokees, Arkansas and Removal, 1794-1839, Something So Dim It Must Be Holy: Civil War Commemorative Sculpture in Arkansas, 1886-1934, and National Historic Landmarks of Arkansas: Little Rock Central High School. The latter is part of a series dealing specifically with the state's National Historic Landmarks. Other volumes in the series are: Historic Railroad Depots of Arkansas, 1870-1940; History and Architectural Heritage of White County; Minority Settlement in the Mississippi River Counties of the Arkansas Delta, 1870-1930; Histroy and Architectural Heritage of Stone County; Public Schools in the Ozarks, 1920-40; The Civilian Conservation Corps in Arkansas, 1933-42; History and Architectural Heritage of Dallas County; Settlement of Lawrence County and Powhatan, 1803-1890; The Camden Expedition of 1864; and Hillcrest: The History and Architecturtal Heritage of Little Rock's Streetcar Suburb. The Arkansas Historic Preservation Program is the agency of the Department of arkansas Heritage responsible for the identification, evaluation, registration and preservation of the state's cultural resources. Other agencies in the department are the Arkansas Arts Council, the Delta Cultural Center in Helena, the Arkansas Commemorative Commission, the Arkansas Natural Heritage Commission and the Arkansas Territoriual Restoration.
