From GMSPublished Wednesday, October 15, 1997 in the Gurdon TimesWe find it difficult to believe that the first nine weeks will come to a close Friday, October 17. Seems only yesterday, or maybe the day before, that we started back after a long restful summer. I think all would agree that we have been busy for those nine weeks. We are continuing to collect pennies, as each home room has a gallon jug for pennies to be dropped into, to be able to buy some equipment for our new building. Our goal is 1,000,000 pennies. Mrs. Whitlock and Mrs. Blanton's home room have filled the penny jugs and are starting on another one. The Book Fair was a success and we appreciate Mrs. Karr, Media Specialist, for taking the time to arrange the times for the students to be able to go "Book Shoppping". The students bought 277 books and Mrs. Green's home room bought the most with $124.78 in purchase. Congratulations students. (and of course Mrs. Green) Monday we had a busy morning, enjoyed a nice lunch, then joyed being outside for a few minutes, and eager to get back to our classes when Excitement Broke Out. The cafeteria workers had an univited guest. Mrs. McDonald caught a glimpse of what she thought was a cat when she looked again it was not a cat, and then she and Dorthy seemed to agree that it was a big white rat. Now you faithful readers please understand the following is difficult even for this writer to believe, but believe me it is true. When those two workers realized it was a varmint of some kind, each of them got on a table. That's right, standing up on a table, while this furry varmint was only trying to be friendly. Mr. Alexander was quickly summoned to come to their rescue. Of course, giving no thought to his own safety, the brave gallant principal rushed out of the office, ran down the hall, and hurried down the steps to the cafeteria to protect the women. He saw the varmint and quickly found a weapon, a bucket. He was able to place the bucket over the varmint and tried to reassure the ladies that the danger was over. Mrs. McDonald felt pretty good after it was all over and she realized that she could jump upon the table. We are not sure who was scared the most, the varmint or the women. The only thing missing from the event, was the superman suit. Oh, by the way, the varmint was a ferret, a pet of a nearby neighbor that had found its way across the street. We are grateful that the "frightened ferret" found its way into the cafeteria instead of Mrs. Smithson's room. We enjoyed a visit from Eddie Bowman (alias Chester Drawers). He is an author, songwriter, entertainers, and an inspirational speaker. He had several of his books available to be purchased by the students. He was certainly an entertainenr, as he had the students asking for more songs, more songs, and more-say come to think of it, was it for more songs,or just to be out of class longer? Forgive this writers for thinking such a thing. editorial Cartoons notebooks have been turned in, at least the assignment date has passed. Now, Mrs. Clingan has something to do. Parent/Teacher Conference will be held October 27. The teachers look forward to meeting the parents and sharing information about the students. We are looking forward to Red Ribbon Week, the last week of this month. We are really going all out in red. The costume contest will be October 31, with Matt Moseler ofChannel 7 as one of the judges. Just have to give special appreciation to Mrs. Debbie White, Art teacher at the high school, and for the 8th graders. She had the stage looking super for the Forest Festival Pageant, but didn't stop at that, as she had the stage looking beautiful for the Home Coming Coronation. Thank you Mrs. White, we do notice and we are very fortunate to have you as a member of "our team". We say thanks to you also for your support and concers. I ask if you would just take a moment to call the Gurdon Times and just say thanks to them for allowing us the space to share some of our Classy Moments with you.
